- Normalize and validate your concerns: Exam season is a time that always causes fear in parents as well as students. However, this is not due to your fault or lack of skills.
- Being self-compassionate and non-judgmental: Never let the fear of exams control us. Instead, if we believe in ourselves and think that we will succeed in the face of all difficulties, we would be able to overcome the fear to some extent.
- Having realistic plans: It is always helpful to assess ourselves. The way we study, our areas of interest, how much we have prepared, etc. That way, we can prepare a practical plan taking into consideration the limitations and strengths.
- Non-comparison: Each of us have our own unique qualities and talents. So, never compare yourselves with others.
- Attempting by all means and not avoiding: During exam time, we may experience mental stress and tension. Instead of feeling discouraged, we can face them confidently by putting in lots of effort through reading, writing notes and by watching videos related to the topics.
- Not getting into the automatic, uncontrollable and negative thought loop, rather focus on controllable behaviours: It is normal to get negative thoughts during exam time. However, we must divert our attention to things in our control without getting caught up in such thoughts.
- Outcomes are not in our control: Exams and their results are not within our control. However, it is our responsibility to take all efforts in order to be successful.
- Adaptive routine: A healthy schedule is very important during exam time. Adequate sleep, proper diet, exercise, ample water, small breaks and self-care help children feel more energetic and be more efficient.
- Message to the parents: Your attitude towards your children is the main factor that influences their studies. If they feel that you have complete faith in their capabilities, they would have more confidence. Moreover, providing a calm home environment can also, to an extent, help them be more mentally prepared. Make them feel that you would stand by them, no matter how the results turn out to be. This will give them more self-confidence.Article by: Vidya N
